Overview and Membership

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the coordinating council for the nine historically African American Greek-letter organizations, often referred to as the Divine Nine. On May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard University, in Washington DC, the National Pan-Hellenic Council was formed as a permanent organization.

The University of Alabama NPHC has eight of the nine organizations. These sororities and fraternities have been an integral part of the UA community since 1974.

Current Chapters:

  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
  • Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

NPHC organizations are committed to community service and support academic excellence between members and the general student body by providing scholarships and programs. In addition to providing a social outlet, NPHC organizations also provide a variety of initiatives designed to enrich the cultural experience of UA students.

How to Join

NPHC organizations recruit members at various times of the year, through a process called Membership Intake (MIP). NPHC chapters determine their recruitment period, which can change each year. Organizations conducting MIP will host informational sessions, commonly referred to as Interest Meetings or Rush events. During these formal sessions, aspirants will typically learn specific information about membership requirements, chapter policies, and financial costs.

At the beginning of each semester, the Alabama NPHC hosts a general interest session, known as Convocation. Convocation provides interested students with information at UA. Topics will include membership requirements and the benefits of joining Greek Life. Convocation also provides an opportunity for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to discuss important information about hazing guidelines and membership expectations.

Fall Convocation covers you for fall & spring membership intake processes. Spring Convocation covers you for spring intake only. After spring, it resets. So, if a student didn’t become a member of an org, you will need to make plans to attend the following year during fall or spring.

Fall 2023 Convocation will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at 4:00 pm CT.

After attending an Interest Meeting, aspirants should complete the online Membership Intake Process FERPA Academic Release & Hazing Policy Acknowledgement Formwhich allows for verification eligibility (i.e. enrollment status and college grade point average).
